for some reason, I want to know what the rifle is in the picture below. I believe this is a guy in the Alaskan gold rush. I imagine the cartridges are probably .30-06 but what is that rifle? It seems to have a very thick and round forearm maybe attached with a key.

Any ideas?

Brent,could be a German bolt gun,model 88 Haenel perhaps? I can't see any part of the action,so it's just a guess.

I was thinking something like that (see what you guys have taught me) or some kind of lever rifle, custom of course.

I don't know why but the gun intrigues me almost as much as the poor overloaded dog.

It looks to me as if what appears to be a thick forearm is actually the sling. the forearm appears to be short with a schnable tip.

I agree, DST and square trigger guard a model 88. They were quite popular around the turn of the century. I spent a few days looking through a lot of historical photos at the local library and saw a lot of 88-Sporters.

Yup, with octagon to round, folding leaf sight, and probably a box magazine under his hand. I'll bet that mutt made a lot of racket going over the Chilkoot Trail with all that hardware.

I own a Lyman swinging peep sight for one of those 1888s, been saving it for a future project, if I can find the right rifle, if I can afford it, if........

'If' is sometimes the biggest word in the world.

Did y'all know that if a frog had pockets then he wouldn't hafta be scared of snakes?
