When did GI .30-06 become non-corrosive? What.is the safe date? Thanks in advance.

The changeover date to non-corrosive was different for different ammo plants.

The following is something I copied from a gun discussion forum some time back. I can not vouch for it's accuracy.

Date priming changed to non-corrosive:

.30 AP Oct 1951
.45 ball July 1`954

Exception: .30-'06 Match dated '53, '54 and '56 is corrosive

All was noncorrosive EXCEPT the 1956 Match which was corrosive

The following arsenals were all corrosive EW DEN DM U or UT.

This may be a silly question, but why would only match ammo have corrosive primers at this late of a date? Was there an advantage to using them?

texraid, It is my understanding that the corrosive primers were more consistent therefore made for more accurate ammo. There was also some commercial .300 H & H magnum match ammo made that was corrosive manufactured long after commercial ammo was non-corrosive.
