Regarding the comment about the 12 over LC enclosed within the four-sided diamond.
As I understand it, the LC mark means a 3" chamber OR LONGER. How much 'longer' is unspecified.
Am I correct or out in left field?

Mr. Dube:
I owe you an apology. In my late week exhaustion, I forgot my manners... especially when it comes to my lack of patience. Especially for many people in today's world who seem to want others to do "the work" for them.

Even in that regard, I was too harsh. I'm sorry for that.

Many on this board simply want to help others. And that's laudable.

You have received good information so far. You may also consider a copy of Notes On The Proof of Shotguns & Other Small Arms, published by the Worshipful Gunmakers of London and Guardians of the Birmingham Proof House. A copy is under $20 US or Canadian:

Hope you continue to frequent the board.

Mr. Rise,

Apology accepted.

I must note however that neither "exhaustion" nor lack of "patience" excuse such ignorance in Canada.

It seems important to you that I obtain some reference material, I assure you that my reference library is sufficient and substantial, thanks for your concern.

I am away from home enjoying March break with my young children (I do hope that's OK with you), and really couldn't imagine any of the esteemed gentlemen on this board being offended by a question from a lazy foreigner.

Thanks again for your time, energy and patience!

Mark

My understanding is the LC mark applies to a 3" or longer chamber. 2 3/4" chambers would thus still be marked as C. I know that 3Ľ" chambers were available in that era, but don't recall what their proof charge was, whether it was heavier than the 1˝oz this gun was proofed with.

Mark I appreciate you posting the marks on this gun, this is how we all gain knowledge of the marks. When you get a chance it would be nice if you could measure the actual chamber length & post them. In all likelyhood they are 3" as Larry stated.

You're correct, 2-piper. The chambers could be longer than 3" with the LC mark. Never safe to assume with those old Brit guns.

I defy anyone from the link above to be able to source a copy of Notes On The Proof of Shotguns & Other Small Arms. There is not even a link to be had on the London or BHam proof website that I can see. If so, tell me Kensal, or who I should write to to get one. Nothing on the Open Library link worked, and I consider myself reasonably sharp, but today I am but a butterknife. smile

Cheers!
