Can anyone tell me what a crown and St.m.g. means on the barrel of my Merkel sporter?I've seen the same mark on a German rifle of the same era (1922) in Double Gun Journal. Thanks [img:center] [/img]

Looks like a "geme" stamp on the tube. STmG( Stahlmetal Geschoss or something similar ) denotes a steel jacketed bullet. There should be a weight in grams just below it. It's a post 1912 stamp that accompanies the Nitro or semi-smokeless stamp.
Kind Regards,

Thanks Raimey,I know "Geme" mean's Gebruder Merkel. It's a 30-06,so the gram's marking will tell me the bullet weight it was proofed with?

Yes it will in grams. There will be a "Crown" over "N' just before the StmG/???(grams).
Interesting stamp just before the serial number. Kind Regards,

The stamp before the serial number is another Gebruder Merkel stamp, a small G inside a larger M in parenthesis.

Took it out of the wood today. There's a 10GR stamp there,so it was proofed with a 154.3 grain bullet.
