Terry Wieland's approach for the stock on his "hen-house" Reilly: A year later, the motor oil has been patiently coaxed out of the wood, and the dents and dings steamed out. Underneath we found a piece of French walnut that is one of the finest gunstocks I have ever seen anywhere. It is breathtaking. The stock has been bent to cast-off and lengthened with hard black German rubber, which looks and acts like the finest ebony and is checkered accordingly. I'm constantly amazed that tacky orange pad goes on some of the world's finest guns, but you see it.
I personally think it's as bad as a wood or horn extensions. A horn plate can be a real thing of beauty, but I cringe when I see a big chunk stuck on the end of the stock.
I think your best option is to have a leather pad installed. Or, I have seen some Silver's that look to be colored or died or something - they have been really darkened. If your fit is perfect, maybe you could explore that - it's still a chunk of rubber at the end of a fine piece of walnut, but at least it's doesn't stick out like a safety cone.

I don't like wood extensions. Dyed pigskin leather pad has been my choice for this application of just one inch.
With a fine gun on his arm, a man becomes a sporting gentleman, both on the field and off.

Here are a couple of options. Beauty is in one's eye, but I like either of these. Thicker one is on a Dickson and thinner one is on a J.Smith hammer gun. The Smith plate could be done with thicker material. Somehow , I enjoy it's look.

I will shoot it though, but it is too nice to hunt IMO. I wish it had a checkered butt at 14 5/8 inch LOP, but it's HARD to find the perfect gun. This gun will be very nice when I get done with it, and will probably go the leather, pigskin pad route.
Socialism is almost the worst.

Since the 1880s,some of the greatest guns and double rifles in the world use the classic Silver's pad. Purdey, Boss, Westley, even A.H. Fox specified the Silver's pad for their XE grade. IMHO, a gun with an "ebony extension" would be in the "hideous" catagory. Silver's and others make brick red and black pads-just change it or have it leather covered but the orignal Silvers in orange is my first choice in pads...I am sorry the one on my Purdey pigeon gun was covered by some wanker in goatskin... Aye- and with today bein' the "Eve O'St. Patty'd Day" orange, to a Green Mick with Belfast-ian roots, that colour might have been the Limey's choice in thumbin' their aristocratic noses a at us poor bog trotters- I like the dark muted red of the June 1922 Pat'd Winchester pads, althoug two of my older Smith 12 bores have the Hawkins--And a wanker in goatskin-- sort of a Limey's version of a man who buys a seer-sucker suit from Coxes Dept. store, or vice-versa, ey wot, Gov??

The English have their own line of pigs? English pigskin of the correct grade and quality is $25-$50 a square foot. Tandy leather in the USA sells American pigskin for wallet linings for perhaps $4 a square foot. One is used on English best guns, the other is used on craft projects for girl scout troops. There's a difference. ;-)

Unfortunately, the source of the German hard rubber has dried up and the smith is no longer offering that service.
