Morning guys, recently I posted an underlever cape gun that you guys were very helpful with. Well this weekend I purchased from the same source a very nice 16 gauge shotgun with beautiful walnut stock, silvered engraved reciever, it even has the figure of a man holding a rifle/shotgun in a small square on bottom of receiver that is the bottom facing of the notch hooks on barrel as slides into place. Barrels are both marked J P Sauer & Sohn, Suhl and the vendors name is on rib "AD LOESCHE. MAGDEBURG."
Its got a few dinks here and there, is surprisingly light and a great firearm. Any way to date this thing, will be taking photos this morning Serial number is 108348

I'd assume that the serial number of 108348 is that of Sauer so from Jeff Stephen's list that would date the sporting weapon to 1904. During this time the Gewehr und Munitionsfabrik concern Adolf Loesche was supplying some sort of target arms to the German Army to employ. Sources give there were 3 different chamberings for the target arms. Adolf Loesche of Magdeburg & Hannover advertised as a Weapons and Ammunition maker but more than likely he sourced his sporting weapons from Suhl or Zella Sankt Blasii - Mehlis.

For the period, it looks to be a Model 8.

Interesting mount?

What, I wonder, is that on the rib? Near where the rear mount would be for a claw mount...Steve
