I am not uncomfortable with the barrel down carry when dogs are present. In this position, muzzle position is quite visible and muzzle direction is very close to the shooter. I have used it for years, but don't remember ever carrying a slung shotgun while my dogs were working.

The barrels point to the ground a few feet in front of you. (Which is why this carry is not good if dogs are present.) Grasping the forearm, you flip the shotgun over as you pull it forward and across with your left hand to raise it into shooting position. It is easier to do than describe. -Bill

Judging just from all the European hunting photographs I've seen, the over left shoulder, barrels down, and left hand controlling the barrels with a firm grasp on the fore end seems to be the norm, at least for standing around getting your picture taken. A couple of European guns I've had exhibit wear to indicate that carry while hunting. I find it awkward...Geo

The slung, barrel down carry works. I do it a lot.
