Luckly in dealing with the "Oldest Union on the West Coast" we had one thing in our favor. That is we would say, Let's just go fishing!' and the negotiations would usually be over. I guess why we did not have labor - boss problems is that in fishing we worked on the share system and if you did not pay fair you did not get crew (or had problems, interesting stories)
I would say about 90% of the boats are extremely fair or honest and 98% now days are safe to work on.
Lowell, sure we had to watch our $ but we always ate equally. It seemed that the only time some one got shorted was when the cannery did not pay, even then the crew is protected by law.

I'd suggest trying a new business but watching your pennies but not the time u put into it. I think while I was working up in the Fishing business for years I never made over $.50 an hour. I guess it was the love of catching fish and doing well at it some of the time. It would be the same for a hobby becoming a business. You'll probably not get wealthy but with enough work per day you will be happy and well fed.
