I'm trying to put the finishing touches on a June trip to Uruguay, but ammo seems to have me stopped dead.

I've told the outfitter I'm shooting vintage guns and I just need some lite 2 3/4 12bore. I explained I'm normally shooting RST 1oz #7 with a velocity of just over 1100fps.

The latest response, "We have asekd everyone we can think of what you could shoot but have had no luck finding anything even remotely close."

Anyone been there or have any advice? I've never run into this problem in Argentina - don't see how Uruguay can be that much different.

Hammer;

Ask your outfitter if the ammo he furnishes has the CIP logo or wording: "Normas CIP" on the box. If it does then ask him to get you some 28gr loads and you will be ok. The load could be a bit faster, but the pressure will be ok. He may be using RIO's and if so their Top Target is a soft recoil. The RIO cartridge box will have printed on the side of it:"control de municion" and under that: NORMAS CIP.

Hammerguy, you may have overwhelmed your outfitter with information about the ammo you prefer. You might try just telling him you would like to have CIP spec. ammo... Geo

Virtually any ammo in Argentina is also available in Uruguay as that's often where the outfitters are sourcing much of their ammo. The kicker is that most of them make large quantity buys whenever possible to get better prices and may be reluctant to go buy a small quantity of something special. I recall a situation several years ago where an individual in our party wished to shoot 28ga. because of some shoulder issues he was having. The outfitter made the accommodation, but the ammo supplied was 15gram garden gun stuff w/small shot & not any good for pass shooting the high flyers in the winter winds.

I'd suggest that you tell the outfitter exactly what brand and loads you have successfully used in Argentina; odds are good that he can get it, if he is willing. Also, let him know that an extra dollar or two/box will not be a deal breaker, if it is necessary.

Kind regards, tw

Im in the same boat if I go overseas, (No pun intended) because I want to take my 16 gauge shotguns, but having said that, is it possible to buy the shells yourself and then ship them to the outfitter/PH?

Thanks for all the information and suggestions. I've presented them all to the outfitter. I trust (hope?) one will be successful - I "need" to get some shooting in, over dogs, and I think those Perdiz will be sorta fun. Will keep you updated.

Lots of Perdiz (the little ones) in Uruguay, and also lots of 'Martinettas', I think they're called, which are a pheasant size cousin of the Perdiz. I hunted over outfitter Hector Sarasola's Brittany Spaniels. Great sport. Good Luck!...Geo

Hammerguy, what happens if they cannot under any circumstances find you the right ammo?

Hammerguy doesn't go to Uruguay. I'm really only interested in shooting my own guns. The silver lining, of course, is it'll just increase the budget for other shooting I want to do a little later this year across the pond (sorry nialmac ;-))
