Most likely glued on. What brand gun? Butt plate or recoil pad...I assume you said what you mean.

Jostam made a couple of recoil pads that were attached by first securing a rubber base plate to the butstock with brass brads and then using rubber cement to attach the pad to the base.

Some newer guns apparently have interchangeable butt pads that snap on and off a fitting on the butt of the gun. I don't own any of these, but I think some of the Beretta Gel Tek pads are snap-ons. And I think I read that some of the CSMC RBL's had interchangeable pads.

NEGC makes detachable pads that work really well. I suppose a metal butt plate could be so configured if you welded studs on the back and plugged/filed the screw holes.

Sorry for the delay...we are talking old, 1911 Webley old.

Thin, single layer horn or "hard rubber".

Glue would seem out of place?

Thank you,
Mark

If it is original 1911, I'd bet on hide glue.

Thanks, I did not know that was an option.

Any idea what would be detrimental to it?

The gun had a lace-up pad on it and it soaked/abraided some of the oil finish up. I rubbed some linseed and alkenet into it and it looks much better...would hate to undo things though!

The usual way to break or clean up a hide glue joint is to use heat or water or some combination of the two (i.e., boiling water). Linseed oil and stain should not damage the joint if applied carefully.
