Easier now that I know where to look. It's embarrassing that I can't find my National Target catalogs but thanks to Dan we can have a look.

If they are too small to read on your computer hold down the "Ctrl" key and then hit the "+" key, use the "-" to scale back down.

Great thread, great detection, and GREAT rifle!

(And thanks to my optometrist and the wonders of bifocals, I could actually read the text without daring to hit those "mystery" keys....)

"His skill and workmanship absolutely cannot be surpassed."

Looking at the inletting and rifle overall, I would think this is truly an example of 'Truth in Advertising'. Again thanks for sharing.

Michael,

By sheer coincidence I was browsing through a book store in Saugerties, NY last Sunday and happened upon a thin book on home gunsmithing which featured the very photograph shown in the National Target brochure above. It was labelled the work of an anonymous amateur.

I particularly noticed the Noske scope and mount, which seemed to me unlikely products of an amateur effort. I did not buy the book, but now I'm beginning to regret it.

Interesting treatment of the trigger guard bow. He profiled the front of it but not the back. Perhaps a 'signature' of his?

Gary,
Why would someone do this? I mean is there a functional improvement? Just looking for your opinion.

I've seen and I have several 1903's with the trigger guard bow reshaped. Some did the front others the back and some slimmed down the whole thing.

The 1903 guard is rather wide, a little work on it makes it look better IMO.

I have profiled the front and back of the trigger guard bows on every custom bolt action I have built, as well as putting an ever-so-slight radius on the outside and inside. I swore I was going to stop being so anal, but...

Michael,
I agree with all you are saying, one question, if this is true and I think again you are correct:
Quote:

Why do it on the front and not the back where you would think you want a more comfortable fit of the finger to the trigger. Anyway it looks more flowing to shape the rear and leave the front wider, IMO.
