The 20 gauge sold for nearly 60k US and it too had the much maligned English single trigger.

hilsman, One possible reason is that the gun was an early Purdey Overunder built on a variation of the E.C.Green patent. These Purdey guns have a deeper and frame and are heavier than the later/present version built on the Woodward Patent. As a result these early Purdey Overunders do not command the high price of the Woodward version. As with all Purdey guns regardless of their design, quality is of the highest standard.

Sometimes. I'm guessing you missed the Purdey pair completed for Henry Ford II, circa 1947, that came up for auction a few years ago. Quality was NOT of the highest standard. Dig saw 'em. They sold for too much, and for the wrong reason.

Roy, I think these were Woodward design as they were built in 1958. Wonder if this is the same gun on Chris Bartha's Gazette page 5 for $60000. Same year and configuration. If so he would probably think he got a bargain at $46000 including buyers premium!

Ted, You may have a point on the H.F,Purdeys.A colleague of mine often went duck shooting with H.F. on lake St;Clair. After looking at a S.L.E'of mine his comments were;"H.F has a pair of guns like yours, last week I went duck shooting with him.He could not put the guns together so I shot his and my limit with my model 12!"

I don't believe that is typical, but, contrary to popular belief, especially on this board, it happens. One could further question if a matched pair of Purdeys really belongs in a duck boat, but, the real question, in this case, is would the world have been a better place if those two guns ended up in the mud under the boat that day? I have my opinion.

And you know what opinions are like...
You bring up those guns up every single time Purdeys are mentioned.
Have you ever handled another Purdey (or handled A Purdey)?
They've made 30,000+ guns. It seems foolish to try and disparage all of them because of a single pair.

Perhaps you should try reading the first sentence, above. But, that said, at the prices mentioned, they SHOULD be brought up, every single time the name comes up. Did you see the pistol grip, single trigger wreck at Pug's a few years back? No amount of money spent was going to make it nice. Price of admission was $8000, about $7995 too much. As to handling best guns, I did more of that in Europe than here, but, I've seen, and owned, my share. Ask me about the first pattern Hollands single trigger sometime-I'll tell you how it works. Unlike you, I don't fall for the it-cost-a-ton-of-money-it-has-to-be-good myopic view of good guns, displayed here, and elsewhere. Does the word "prudence" mean anything to you?
