I just imported a gun from England which cost less than $10k. I was told I would have a small import fee at the time of purchase......well, with duty fees, customs fees, airport fees and importer fees I got the very unpleasant surprise that I now owe the importer $728.30 before this gun can be shipped to my FFL holder. Plus it took over 4 months for the gun to arrive in the USA. Do I have reason to be upset a little with these 'hidden' fees? I don't think I will EVER import another gun!

Duty fees and custom fees are set by the US government. I've never heard of airport fees. The importer fee should have been agreed upon before importing. (I use to be an importer) The fees aren't unreasonable for a gun around $10k, depends upon the custom fee. The cheapest import fee that I can find, and I've looked pretty hard, is $300 per gun.

I'm done with importing after 3 of them. The other part of it is like Forrest said: "...is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get"

Might be cheaper in the long term to visit England, look around and buy a gun; a lot of modern looking sidelocks were made before 1898 (if that is your antique qualification date) and take it back with you. Might get the wife's approval for buying it if she gets a trip out of it. Lagopus.....

Buzz, I operate(d) in Wisconsin and am an Importer. I haven't imported a gun in 2-3 yrs, due to costs and market over here.In my experience the first gun in the shipment costs $800-$1000 with all the fixed costs i.e Export license UKP 30 1 gun or 20, Airport handling fee etc etc After the first gun each additional gun adds @ $200 in freight cost ( weight) and US duties (2.6%) etc. Regarding 4 months I'd say that's pretty good, 6 weeks this end to get ATF6a approved before anything starts over there. I've tried to point this out a couple of times but the "cognesenti" tell me I'm full of it and it should only cost $2-300 I'd say both Price and Timing are about normal, surprising maybe but normal. If it helps ease the pain consider what you would have paid in local sales tax plus margin if you'd bought the same gun from a local dealer.

If anyone is interested I can put you in touch with my importer. At $300 + customs fees per gun, he's the cheapest I've found. He gets this price down by shipping large containers full. So it might take longer.

Hugh's breakdown tracks closely with my experience in the importation of my Manufrance Ideal a couple years ago. Worked out to about 400.00 to get it out of France, and then about 700.00 on this end. A lot of money relative to the value of the gun, but cheaper than taking the wife to France again.

The difference in costs is the difference in importing "antiques",pre 1898 guns and modern fire arms. Still Mike Harrel's deal is the best I've heard

So to clarify. These large importing fees, and extra work using a importer, licenses...etc. are just for importing modern (post 1898 guns)? As far as I have always understood you can have a pre-1898 gun shipped directly to your house from anywhere in the world. I have not imported one yet, but some clarification would be nice since I do have my eye on a couple pre-98's in an upcoming UK auction.
