The kind of broad sweeping statements that were made about modern punt gunning were moronic and completely knee jerk reactions, I was calling a spade a spade. That same kind of reaction is what will get first lead shot, then hunting, and finally guns banned in the US.
The "I don't agree with it so it must be wrong, I don't care about the facts" mentality is how steel shot for waterfowl and many other useless hunting and gun related laws came into effect.
In the UK, pretty much everything that's outlawed here (other than live decoys) is still perfectly legal. They've managed to maintain a strong duck and goose population without all the oddball gauge restrictions and other weird laws we have.
I've been there, I've hunted there, I have tons of friends there. This is not something I read on the internet or heard around the stove at the feed store, this is first hand information.
Punt gunning, as it survives today is a sport, and a very interesting one. If a person took time to look past the end of their nose and had any interest in the actual history of waterfowling they'd find it as fascinating as I do.

the responses are not that acrimonious, compared to some former flare-ups on assorted subjects. You just gotta wait for it

When I was in high school it was a long boring bus ride home every day. Wed play the insult game. Someone would start it by throwing out some terrible insult at someone else (usually casting doubt on their victims sexual orientation or perhaps their suspected lack of manly equipment) the game of course was to come back with something worse, ideally turning your attackers words back on him. If a player ended up getting so frustrated and POd that he physically assaulted his opponent, he automatically lost. Apparently, there are board members here that still play those high school games . Ah for the good old days of our youth! Steve

I feel your pain jOe, though I dont have a problem with punt guns for sport as its played today. I find things like putting out game feeders for deer is a turn-off for me. The way I view it, you first turn Bambi into a pet by feeding him every day and then you kill him when he comes in for his dinner. Thats standard deer hunting practice here in Texas and I understand, what with the amount people spend for deer leases they expect to be guaranteed something, even if it means shooting a semi-domesticated deer. However, theyd get more and better meat by making a deal with the rancher to just shoot one of his steers. That said, just because I dont want to hunt like that doesnt mean I frown on others doing it, I just dont see any sport in it, nor do I see any sense gratification such as one gets when theyve worked hard stalking their prey. Steve

I don't know why I'm doing this. It maybe just me but any time I see someone shooting waterfowl on the water it makes me see red and its something I just can't accept and probably never will.

To define 'Sportsmanship' is a difficult question.
A punt gunner may go out ten times, fire one shot, kill 20 birds and injure 3.
A shore gunner may go out ten times, fire fifty shots, kill 20 birds and injure 3.
Which one is the greater 'Sportsman' of the two? Lagopus.....

Well if a guy is man enough I guess he can stand up in the boat, shoulder it, and shoot them on the wing.
