Man I was at the W.VA store yesterday. My first time. I don't know if I approve. Not that it matters much. It's like Disneyland. The Museum of white tails, African safari, aquarium, I was looking for It's a Small World or Pirates of The Carribean! Lines for everything. People come there with their whole family and make a day out of it. Lunch for a family of 4 has to be at least $50.00. Kinda like a Home Depot/ Loews of sporting goods. The place just smelled like money being spent. Call me a kermudgen, but give me my local gunshop anyday.

I think the two stores DT is talking about are the proposed CT and ME stores. The Maine Cabelas is slated to start going up in 2008 in the town of Scarborough. It will be interesting to see if it actually happens.

Scarborough!?! That's about thirty miles. I bet ol' Leon Leonwood is rollin' over in his grave. . . Freeport? What's a Freeport? They should have added an extra lane or two to the Maine Pike when they had the chance two years ago in the 'expansion project.' It can only help Kittery.

I heard a rumour of Cabelas investigating some other sites too--my dad mentioned hearing of a possible cabelas store near Albany, NY

And another in Bozeman, MT...
If rumor of all these new stores are true, I have to think they may be over-stepping a sound business plan, or ditching the model that got them where they are today.
Retailing trends are going exactly the other direction (towards catalogues, albeit online) that Cabela's made its first fortune on. The overhead and labor force for their impressive but massive stores has got to be gawd-aweful.

It wouldn't surprise me in the least if 80% of these rumors never come true...but I see retail heading towards larger bax stores and stores that ALSO have a catalog/web presense...i.e. cabelas. If it worked for Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes, Sears, etc the "giant store located central to a population center" model seems to work.

Guys, there is little to buy in a Cabela's. I think they are theme parks for bumpkins, with all merchandise at full retail; treasonous words in this crowd.

Plenty here see it as you do-but, Larry will dress us down if we say it! A buddy (the one who just bought the NID 16 that needs some help) called me from the place in Rogers a week ago.
He said, "There is nothing here for me to buy". I couldn't agree more. Wouldn't kill 'em to have a bit of 16 gauge ammunition in the place, would it? Best, Ted
