Not only that Wade but some of the things were still mating last week in my front yard. Should be a prolonged hatch. If we don't get bad weather there should be lots of birds this fall.

Its a good time to practise some of that low gun skeet that Joe Woods & Rabbit were speaking of on your other thread, shoot some charity sporty clays events if you don't shoot registered or just get some buds together and play some low gun 'scrap' or a combination thereof, if you have a trap field superimposed on a skeet field.
Heck, just take the dog out and loaf in the field some, if nothing else than to toughen his pads, get the dog snake broke if there is any chance he might encounter one, but some form of clay practise will prove beneficial come the fall & bird season.
'Stick birds' are the best cheap date out there, but it takes two to play, like a real date. Got any young guys about to help wield the stick half the time? The 'game' is nothing more than an old Remington hand thrower attached to a pool cue, but the birds thrown from one are amazingly fast and big fun to try to hit. With a bit of thot you should be able to simulate something similar to your nemesis shot with a stick bird set-up. Try it, you'll like it.
Best to you, your summer and your efforts to last until the coming season arrives. Making your first shot count is a reasonable goal and one the dog will appreciate as much as your praise for his finding and flushing the bird. Keep it safe, life's too short as it is.

I'm sorta laughing about the last post. My home in Baja has a big fenced yard covered with crushed shells. We have a "pet" Roadrunner, and Flash has been practicing pointing him...sometimes from the prone position...Thanks...

Has anyone hunted in WI for Grouse or Prairie Chickens. How is it and where are the public lands? No open season on chickens in WI, although there's at least one state area that has them. Some possibilities for working dogs on chickens. There is a sharptail season, but they don't get a lot of attention or pressure. If you're talking about ruffed grouse, there are public lands all over the northern third or so of the state. National and state forests, and some individual counties also have in the neighborhood of 100,000 acres of county forest. No problem finding places to hunt ruffs and woodcock here.

RCC, hope I'm not being nosey but where in SD did you purchase some land?
I have hunted the area around Gary, SD for several years. Thinking about puchasing some land in SD myself.
Looking forward to the Fall too. I bought just outside of Henry. Pretty fair pheasant hunting around there and great within a hour in most any direction. I chose that part of SD because in the off season there are all those Glacier lakes to fish and train dogs in.

A good friend of mine recently moved to Minot, and he said it is so bad that people are renting out their yards as rv space and charging $1000/mo per space. He said someone he knows noticed his water pressure dropping off, so he checked underneath his trailer house and found a couple squatters living there that had spliced into his water pipes!

Mark, my cousin lives in Williston and can verify such things are happening. He says our state will never be the same up there.

The thing I most like about Gary and that area is the people. Not a lot of variety in upland birds though - mainly pheasant.

I'm making plans and already feel there isn't enough time between Sept and Feb to squeeze in all the hunting I need to do. Sept 1 will see me dove shooting. I can start in on the grouse right away and then chukar, quail, huns..... My bird hunting season started early this year with these big grouse:
