Thought it might be time for an update on this project. I had Pac-Nor copy the contour of the original barrel in a .224 1-14 blank. Sent the rifle, barrel, and .22 Hornet reamer to up to WI to spend some quality time with Glenn Fewless. Glenn installed the barrel, did a bunch of work on the firing pin and block. Polished the action including fixing some old welded up scope mount holes. The whole was then rust blued and the trigger plate re-color cased. Here are some itsy bitsy pictures of the finished product. You can right click on the pictures and get a larger image. Wish the picture of the checkering were a little bigger. Some say Shelhamer used a border to hide over-runs on his checkering. You won't find any over-runs hiding in this border.

The only remaining problem is some damage to the forend. The area in the checkering could probably be hidden pretty easily, but those outside the checkering would be much harder.

Someone asked recently in another thread about Shelhamers grip shape. This rifle has what I would consider a typical pre-war Shelhamer grip treatment. It is quite a bit more vertical that what we generally see today.
Thanks,
John
