I really feel for you guys in the Dakota's and Montana with this boom. I'm sure it is reaking havoc on your lives. The world is changing elsewhere too. To be frank, I feel sorry for the whole of America with socialized medicine and socialism in general coming....more and more immigration and these people popping out new US citizens like rabbits. America, in general is in the toilet, I'm sorry to say. We will never be able to go back to 'the good old days' and we might as well get used to it everywhere IMHO because it's only going to get worse and more socialistic. A run away train for sure.

jOe and Last Dollar,

I’m a bit sensitive about talk about petroleum production, hydraulic fracturing and the environment. I’ve spent the last 34 years working as geologist. I have 15 years experience in petroleum geology and 19 years experience in environmental geology. The environmental initiatives that began in the 1970’s have done a lot to improve our environment. However, there are groups who are all too willing to bring up bogus environmental issues, while actually working towards a different agenda. For instance, when I lived in Naperville IL I shot trap at an in town trap range that had its start back in the 1940’s when it was still farmland. A neighbor who was tired of hearing gunfire every Wednesday night and Sunday took the City of Naperville to court claiming that lead was polluting his well. His well was over 1,000’ deep, of that 1,000’ of over-burden at least 500’ was impermeable clay. When he went to court he didn’t even have an analyzed water sample to back up his claims, yet for some reason the burden of proof was put on the City of Naperville. Naperville won the suit, but from that point on only steel shot was allowed. Much of the pollution claims being associated with hydraulic fracturing are based on the same types of agendas. Typically, when a claim is scientifically analyzed it can be shown that the pollution was naturally occurring (they’re called natural oil-seeps and 100 years ago, and even today, they’re used to find oil) or quite often the oil or gas is coming from an old oil well that wasn’t abandoned properly or even a new oil well that wasn’t completed properly. Yes, in those two cases the problem was traced back to oil wells, but it had nothing to do with hydraulic fracturing.

So pumping immense quantities of water mixed with chemicals http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fracking_fluid in the ground doesn't hurt anything ?

So would you argue that since driving 75mph in tin boxes that can and do run off the road and into trees and kill everybody inside autos need to be outlawed? Or would you weigh benefits and risks and say the benefits of automobiles are worth the risks?

Or would you argue that when I go bird hunting I should use steel shot because the lead shot might get pecked up by bob whites and those bobs, when eaten by humans, might give them lead poisoning. Or would you weigh costs against the risk and decide that lead shot is acceptable for bird hunting?

Would you immediately outlaw the burning of fossil fuels because of CO2 and global warming or would you weigh benefits and risks and support the continued use of fossil fuels?

Would you pass a law that all shotguns in the US should be subjected to government proof testing or would you weigh the cost against the risk and keep the system we have?

I am glad to be here.

jOe,

Since you asked, most of the frac water pumped into the formation during the hydraulic fracturing process is recaptured. When the well starts flowing oil/gas back to the surface it also flows back the frac water that was used in the fracturing process. This frac water is then disposed of by pumping into a deep saltwater aquifer through a salt water disposal well. In most areas, after a depth of 2,500’ to 3,000’ most of the aquifers are saltwater anyhow. Those 1,000’ “freshwater” Naperville wells, that I spoke of earlier, came from the Galena Aquifer and had high enough amounts of dissolved minerals to make the water almost undrinkable without softening. I’m certain that if some of the components of the frac water are valuable enough they are recycled, even oil folks don’t like to throw money away.

Are you feeling better yet?

Steve

I apologize for taking this thread off-subject (it's all jOe's fault! crazy). As far as bird hunting's concerned, now's the time to start getting in shape so you don't ruin your hunting season with a heart attack.

You're right jOe, I just said that as a lame attempt at humor (hence the smiley face). So now let's get back to - Bird hunting season.

I just sent two big running dogs to the Canadian prairies for summer school with an outstanding dog handler. I am hoping I have a couple of cracker jack bird dogs when they get home this fall. Hopefully they will see lots of birds this summer!
