The one gun I had that had a BLO finish gummed up on the wrist in the heat of 115F dove hunting. Sweat, dirt, heat and BLO. What's not to like?

Not to hijack or sidetrack this thread, but...
Regarding spar varnish. With a minor league background in small boat pleasure sailing with wooden masts and booms, and memory refresher from the late Ralph Walker's gunsmithing book, I decided to switch to a spar varnish and linseed oil mixture for stock refinishing. The problem was finding REAL spar varnish that wasn't really a modern poly sailing under false colours. When you find your "spar varnish" CAREFULLY read the fine print on the can. The only true spar varnish I found was Epiphane (sp?) from Holland.

I still have some old-formula McCloskey spar var that I am hoarding. Have not been able to get the good stuff for about 15 years or more.

The only thing that will gum up more than BLO on a hot, humid hunt is BLO with wax over it.
