Today I looked at an Ithaca 10ga. 28"bbls Mod/Full. 271,XXX.
What can you tell me about this gun? What should I look for?

I can find no refence of a 10 hammerless in "The Ithaca Gun Company" 2nd eddition By Walter C. Snyder.

That's a Flues Model, made about 1912. Look for another gun or a 10 Ga. reloader.. MDC

2 7/8" chambers, not made for modern pressure levels. You can load shells for it as noted above. It would have to be good to mint to interest me. Hard to justify a short 10 when I can do it all with a 12 already.

There are other options, I shoot 12 gauge Winchester Xtra-lites out of my 10 bore 1878 Colt using 10-12 Guagemates.

12:

Its a Flues Model. If its a 10, it is likely built big and meaty, but you will need to handload for the short chambered 10. On the other hand, it can be a very flexible gun.

If it were me, unless its a really nice example, I would pass.

If you want a "short Ten", get a 2-7/8" " Super Ten" in an NID, thats a GREAT gun, and well worth the hassle of loading. If you just want an all around double to shoot, a 12 bore NID would be my first choice, although you can get some really nice Fluzies.

Thank you gentelmen.

It is in really nice shape. No pits, very clean bores, some case, very heavy (9lbs-ish). By no means excellent. It was given a clean bill of helth from a very well know shop/smith, not far from here.
It looked as though it had been carried more than it had been shot.

I was concerned about serviceability, as I reload for a 16ga Flues and 2 12ga Bakers. I was not looking to get into a 23/4" 10ga, 27/8 maybe.

What are the service pressures you would suggest as guidelines? Are there books you would suggest I read for more information about 10ga guns.

Not sure why but I like the idea of an old 10 and duck hunting.

12,

There are a series of articles about loading the short 10 in the Double Gun Journal written by Sherman Bell that are very informative about loads and service pressures.

I can't remember which issues they are in and I am sure someone will be along with that information.

If I hadn't gone on a rifle buying jag, a 10ga Flues would be on my list (less expensive than a NID, which is also on my list) for a neat waterfowling gun with bismuth shot.
