Very interesting story.I've only seen one Adolph in the flesh and that was many years ago and the only thing that impressed me was the engraving and that it was a 30'06.His story of woodchuck hunting shows a writing style like something you would expect out of a professional comedy writer. He must have been a very well read and "worldly" gentleman. His misfortune as a gunmaker has left us the poorer for it.

Roy Vail, I believe, had a collection of Adolph material back in the early 60's.I had a list of stuff he had for sale back then. Wonder what happened to it?Paper is a pain to keep track of and conserve and most of it eventually turns to dust anyway.

I don't believe that I knew about any of the Adolph material that Vail had. Would be interesting to know where it is today.

Someone could write an interesting article about Vail, maybe for True Crime Magazine ;-). I have heard so much speculation about Vail I have no idea what is true and what is not.

Vail dabbled a bit in antiques and knew a relative of mine way back when.I found out about the Adolph material when I was a kid and looking for books about guns and my relative offered up some stuff she had gotten from her friend,Vail.Needless to say I wasn't interested in archaic stuff like the Adolph material. I wanted Shooters Bibles and Gun Digests.
