I have a Merkel that is marked as being imported by Sloans. Where can I find information on what they were and what happened to them?

Which Merkel?

"I forgot to note that there were others Suhl firms which used the advertising stamp "Sole U.S. Agents Sloans Sportings..." with one being Abesser & Merkel which was a partnership of Paul Abesser(I don't know of a F. Abesser yet) and Ernst Merkel, who received his master's sheepskin on August 14, 1929. I think it was a short lived venture in the 1920s and possibly 1930s which is the same time period we are concerned with for now."

Sloan's also was the sole importer of Gebrüder Adamy.

They also imported V Bernadelli shotguns. Looks like they used a trophy engraver to cut their name into the barrel of mine.

Ah!! The good old days when large cities wern't the cesspools of anti-gun activity that they are today.
How many of you remember that Marshall Fields had a very upscale firearms department in their Michigan Avenue location?

How many of you remember that Marshall Fields had a very upscale firearms department in their Michigan Avenue location? John Amber managed it at one time.
Or do you remember when Abercrombie & Fitch was a real mens sporting goods store and was nothing like the abomination it is today?
VonLengerke and Detmold had large stores in both New York and Chicago at one time as I remember it.
I guess we've experienced some real "progress" here.
Here's the A&F 1940 catalogue: Their current catalogue wouldn't be suitable to post here.

Sloans closed many years ago. The imported many of the knowned name guns.

I knew Howard Waltzer who was one of the owners and family.

Like many places gone.

I have a Finnish mfrd. Valmet "Lion" 12 ga. O/U with a Sloan's import marking. Sloan's apparently added a US-manufactured "PolyChoke" rib to these (wish they hadn't....)

A&F isn't the same company it was back then - they went under and some time later their name was bought by another entity.

Their New York store was wonderful! So was Francis Bannerman if you wanted cannons and land mines!

London has a phenomenal concentration of gun shops - that alone makes the trip worthwhile!

Jim,

Griffin and Howe had the entire fifth floor in Abercrombie's on Madison Avenue. All of the years, now alas long ago, when I would go there, the elevator doors at the gun floor would open and there would be a full size cannon or Gatling gun pointing straight at you, about 10 or 15 feet away.

Also, the main floor was filled with high end - think Hemingway on safari - outdoor gear and clothing.

Those were the days.

Griffin and Howe's present digs - in Bernardsville, NJ - ain't too shabby either.
