Gentlemen:

We have been working on the promised Skeleton Buttplates. There was a bit of progress tonight and I am attaching some pictures. This is the latest blank in the latest die modification. We are getting closer. The mill is alleged to be arriving on Monday. Hopefully the die work will largely be done and we can try machining the inside draft and clean up the outside.

All comments and critiques are welcome. It ain't cut in stone yet...

Glenn

And finally, a picture of our Quality Assurance Team at work.

Glenn,
Whew! clearance looks close, nearly all shear. Are you going to machine draft on the widow's peak also? BTW, nice blank.

Glenn,
Excellant endeavour, but is there that much demand for Skeleton buttplates? I am very interested in peoples varying tastes for custom adornements.

Glenn, Thanks for the update, looking good! Round or pointy, either way I'll buy one, two if you let me.

Salo,
There's no source for them anymore, so demand is ? but supply is definitely 0.

Mr. Fewless,
I'd be interested in purchasing one when the time comes...I was given a phone number to reach you but unfortunately lost it, and I hear the PM function on this board is temperamental(?)...

Is there a best way to contact you about this?

Thanks,
Dave

Glenn,

To my eye, they look a little thick. I'd reduce the thickness by a 1/3 to 1/2.

I did see a CSM 21 with a factory installed skel plate. It was quite thin. Much thinner than I would have expected. Probably about what Phil suggests. Not haveing installed one, What's better? Thick or thin? Why?

Glenn, Doug, myself, and others have had many skeleton plates pass through our hands over the years in this business. There have been thickness discussions by many.

One of the most disappointing things about skeleton plates is the screws pulling themselves through thin screw webs. Yes, I know that the screws are not suppose to be used for basic inletting. However, the final fitting requires many on and off procedures in order to get the inletting correct. Slave screws work well, but the web still is stessed. The desire is to have a piece of wood that looks like it grew through the buttplate without having liquid inletting applied(epoxy). Sure is a pain to have to weld up the plate and remachine the web after many hours of fitting.

Is the top hole normally found on the radius of the part inleted into the top of the stock and much bigger than the other screws? Punch and then form?
