My "Mayberry Krag", a 40s-50s era Krag Sporter in an E.C. Bishop white-line stock, needs better buttplate screws. They are rough, as the gun was stored for a while when I was deployed in a damp room on carpet. Thoughts?

Can they be refinished or are they beyond that? Do you have a friend with a lathe, it will only take a couple minuets. I suppose you could do them by hand but a lathe would be a big help.

Why not use an electric drill

IIRC the original screws should be plated. You can remove the plating and then polish the screw heads in some sort of spinning arrangement such as a lathe or drill motor with some abrasive cloth or sandpaper.

However the resulting circular polishing marks are unsightly to some, so the screw heads need to be final-polished in a direction that leaves all remaining polishing marks parallel to the screwdriver slot.

After final polishing, I've found that Oxpho-Blue Gel is quite effective at recoloring to a nice rather dull blue but it takes 3-4 applications with THOROUGH degreasing between applications as well as applying it using DEGREASED fine steel wool.

They're pretty heavily pitted. Just want a pair that look pretty decent already blued. New if I can get them.

That's 10 of 'em, and I only need 2. Shipping's as much as the screws there, too.

Go to the screw store and buy the closest you can find to what you have. They'll probably be cad plated. "Burn" the cad plating off with a propane torch (in a well ventilated area). Polish and blue.
