Any information or ideas about this old Sporter would be welcome - no Serial Number - just a proof and the letters DAS.

It seems like a nice old gun.

Have you taken the stock away and looked under the forebridge ?

Nice rifle - large ring 98 action and looks complete and in excellent shape. I expect it's an 8x57? I like that trigger guard better than the more common type which is a separate piece, larger and more ornate, more like on a shotgun.

Could have been made by any of a thousand out of work gunsmiths sprinkled all over Germany in dozens of small highly competent shops after the war. But as Igorrock said, take the stock off and look for more markings. I don't know what the eagle on the receiver ring means - maybe someone on the German rifle forum can help you if noone here knows.

How can you tell if its a Large Ring, I don't see the step on the left sidewall.

First of all,it is necessary to send photos of the markings under the barrel and reciever.Also,a photo showing whether the set triggers are in a separate unit or built into the mag.assy. itself.The eagle mark is reminiscent of the imperial acceptance mark found on the "civilian sniper rifles" discused in other threads.This is interesting,but this rifle doesn't have features that would include it with these rifles. There are no scope mounts and no signs that it had them.The rifle has,no doubt,been refinished.If stock markings had been present,they would have been removed by this.It is my impression that this is a typical sporter built after WW1 with a KAR 98 barrel/action.What is a little perplexing is the existance of the acceptance mark.It would be reasonable to expect it to be removed,along with the other markings.The stippled oval on the reciever ring is also interesting,I can't tell if its only hiding a crest or if its covering a filled in dovetail(for scope mount).I would be interested in Axel's impression.
