As confused as ever:
Mr. Drew Hause: a service pressure of 3 tons per sq. in. =. 8,938 psi service pressure (CIP)
European (CIP) proof pressure of 850 kg per sq. cm. (BAR) = 13,920 psi proof pressure = (about) 10,730 psi service pressure (SAAMI)
Mr. L. Brown: You'll probably find quite a few Brit guns with Damascus barrels, nitro proofs and the 1 1/8 shot charge mark. And you'll undoubtedly find some that have passed reproof and are now marked either 3 tons or 850 bars. If your gun carries any of those marks, you should be good to go with those shells.
So am I to understand that:
1 1/8 oz. = 3 tons service pressure = 850 bars proof pressure (Mr. L. Brown) = 10,730 psi service pressure (Mr. Drew Hause)
However
3 tons = 8,938 psi. service pressure (Mr. Drew Hause).
Mr. 2-piper: 3 1/4 tons service pressure is more than 3 tons service pressure (he did not say so but his math made me understand that - for which I am only too happy to stand corrected) against both 2 1/2 and 2 3/4 in. standard loads being the same service pressure as per CIP today. Where as previously 1 1/4 oz. loads were by definition 2 3/4 in. non magnum loads in the UK not to be used in guns marked 2 1/2in. or 1 1/8 oz.
My apologies if I have appeared rude to anyone as that was not my intention and without taking anything away from the original poster who simply asked if a certain cartridge could be used in his Damascus barreled gun!
I am probably reading all this right to left instead of left to right but then most double guns are geared that way!
All the best
