Sirs, good evening. I have just received my 1st hammer shotgun, and an English one at that. Here is a brief description if you can't make out the photos :

W&C Scott and Son 12 gauge. 2 1/2" chambers. Serial # 33424. Barrels are 29 7/8" but it comes out to an even 76cm if you use the metric scale.
Top Rib Inscription : W&C Scott & Son Makers & Patentees London
Bottom of Right and Left barrels : 13B with a 14M below that, stamped "not for ball."
I cannot make out the other symbols.
On the Action Flat : a diamond that says inside "W.C.S.S. , Patent OCT 65, 2572" also a tower with a flag at top inside an oval.
The Right bore diameter is .739 at 3, 6, 9, 12, and 15". Then it opens up to .743 to the end of the tube. Minimum BWT is .026" at 24".

The Left bore diameter is .743 at 3, 6, 9, 12, and 15". Then it opens up to .752 until the end of the tube and it constricts to .719 choke. Minimum BWT is .023" at 24".

Can anyone tell what year it was made?
Does anyone think the bores have been honed out by the measurements given?

Thank you for your help.

c1883 by the s/n.

Birmingham proofed at 13 bore (.710")/ 14 muzzle (.693")...

Way out of proof at .739" and .743" (usually +.010" is out of proof), but with wall thicknesses which could be ok with gentle loads.

Definitely honed plenty. The proof marks were used between 1875-1889. The serial number will give a precise date with investigation.

I'd really measure wall thickness from chamber to 18" out where it really counts. Someone honed out a lot of pitting and we want to make sure you have enough thickness near the breech to determine it is safe to fire with low pressure 2.5" shells.

Don't fire it until you establish it has enough metal!

P.s- Scott's are lovely guns. Yours is a utility/field grade and nothing to scoff at.

Right bbl : 3"-.1325, 6"-.082, 9"-.0595, 12"-.042, 15"-.033, 18"-.0285, 21"-.027

Left bbl : 3"-.1205, 6"-.0735, 9"-.052, 12"-.0405, 15"-.0305, 18"-.026, 21"-.0245

I wish I were a better picture taker. Thanks for the help thus far.

I was privalidged to go round the W&S works a year or so before they closed.
A very knowledgable gentleman named Pat Whattley took us round. I have a feeling he has written a definative book on W&S and may hold the records. I'm afraid i don't have a contact for him but the Bhm prooof house may have contact details. Alternativly Jon Hay of the Bhm gun museum might be able to help.

Looks like a good shooter. The hammers look a lot like those on the Remington 1889 model, but the Remington's are a bit more circular. Congrats.

The Scott spindle was patented in 1865 if my memory is correct, likely what that patent is referring to. Assuming those wall thickness measurements were accurately taken they would appear to still be ample.

Hi, nice hammergun! Just love them, regardless of grade. Here's a extract from N. Browns Book with a list of SN for WC Scott:

Looks like 1883 for the year she was made.

Can you provide any pic of the bbl flats?

Congrats!!

I think the patent applies to the Purdey double under-bolt
