Yes, it is long for a double. I always regret not purchasing a single 8 bore percussion gun here in England some years ago which had something like a 50 odd inch barrel. Those guns were called 'marsh rails' and were used much in the manner of punt guns but off the bankside to shoot at rafts of duck on the water. It is possible that yours is one such.
