I'm looking at a Winchester mod 24 12. gauge. Price: 795. I would like to refinish the stock and forearm. This would be my first project. Any comments regarding this gun or the refinish project would be appreciated. Thanks

That's a little high on a Model 24. A better shotgun for this first project would be a Nitro Special, which in many people's opinion is a far better gun for less money. smile

I often the the Model 24's available in the $500 range, particularly in 12 gauge; your price might be a bit high. Unlike many I don't hate 'em, and rather like them in 16 and 20ga. I don't own one, though.

Yes, $795.00 seems quite high for a model 24. It would have to be in near mint original condition for that. Assuming it needs refinishing, it isn't near mint condition. What are the barrels/bores like? Where I am, most 24's have a tough time breaking the $400.00 price with most at between $300.00-$350.00.

Personally I think it is too high. If your heart is set on it try to dicker the price down a lot. I don't hate my 24 but I just don't like the look without fences. This year it will probably be in my friend's gun cabinet. smile

I just looked at a bunch of them on the net..CHEAPEST was 595 (ratty) with many over 1000 bucks...795.00 is right in the low middle...

I saw one sell at an auction two weeks ago for $525. And it was in really nice shape. Also a 1939. Asking prices and selling prices are two different things.

Yes, asking prices are sure different than actual selling prices. And area/country makes a big difference. At anything above $500.00, in most of Canada, one would have it until you know what froze over. But the US is usually a much better market for SxS's.

Thanks for all of the input. I'm looking at this gun at Jaquas in Lima Ohio. I believe I'm going to rethink this particular gun. The gun us choked in IC and CYL which sort of struck me as an odd combination for a 12 GA made in 1939. I'm not that familiar with Winchester but this gun sounds more sporting than hunting

I'll weigh in too with the opinion that $795 is a little too high for a 12ga model 24. I have a 20 ga in very nice condition I paid $750 for but I detest the gun; what a pig!

Some have said a 16ga is a better feeling gun. They may be correct. I've noticed that Savage 311's in 12ga are pigs and in 20 ga they're also pigs, but the 16s somehow meet the "goldilocks" happy medium for me...Geo
