Was just rereading my notebooks and found reference to some very successful pheasant hunts toting a Hunter Fulton 16. Probably need to find something like that for a rain gun.
Dogs don't always enjoy hunting in nasty weather. I've seen two pointers and a shorthair go down with hypothermia. One of the pointers was a very cold Dec day in North Dakota, but the other pointer and the shorthair were with temps in the 30's. Hunting pheasants, not raining (or at least not any more than some light mist), but the cover was very wet.

So what makes us a steward of one gun but not another? Seems to me some of the Rainy day guns mentioned would be someone elses collector gun.

My "good" guns are all Fox Sterlingworths, which appear listed as "rain guns" by some here. My own rain guns are Stevens 5100's which were my good guns once.

I'm a preservationist at heart. Using a nice gun to lift barbed wire in a day's rain is, to me, like a contest to see how fast the thing can be degraded. I take no joy in that. I have a few dedicated, non-descript guns for beater work.
On a nice day, though, I have no qualms about taking an equally nice gun afield. My manner is still careful and I've yet to sustain any more wear and tear than I would at the range. Makes me happy.
I understand people that just want to hunt, and I understand people who just enjoy fine, high-condition guns. What I don't understand are people that take a nice gun to the field, treat it like a sodden stick, and then want to refinish it and do it over again. Hmm?

Imo, life is too short to hunt with a rain gun. Use 'em and clean 'em. Never a problem.

My rain gun is a 16ga. NID that was cut from 30" to 28" before I got it. It's worn but sound and I happen to shoot it better than anything else I own.

Rob is onto something.
Mine is a 48AL20. It lived behind the seat of my truck for years. Friction tube developed an orange tint, cleans off with steel wool.
However else we define a "rain gun", the thing ought to fit. Ideally, it does things beyond the capabilities of the hands that carry it. Mine is one of these. Have used it to kick K and P gun butt at NSSA events. Have no idea how it has done this, b/c I normally live between stink and mediocre.
Yup, a good rain gun makes us pray for rain. Even a couple of drops gives me an excuse to put the double away.
