Does anyone have experience travelling to Spain to purchase a used shotgun? Any advice would be appreciated.

Topas bars are well worth the price of admission ;-)

Forester, Welcome to the board! Specifically, what are you looking to purchase? Ask on this end who would handle an import for you and get familiar with the form 6 from BTAF, and don't be in too much of a hurry should you make a deal to have it in your possesion.

I am interested in looking for a good quality grouse hunting gun - probably a nice, older boxlock 16 ga or 20 ga. Don't need a best quality sidelock for busting through the brush here in Minnesota.

My daughter is currently in college in SE Spain. I have asked her to look for some gunshops, but so far she has not succeeded in finding any. I am hoping to at least get some potential contacts before I go over to visit in April.

If you'll give me a few days, I'll see what I can come up with for you. There are some very fine gun clubs there and it may be possible for me to put you in touch with some good spots. PM your email addy to me & I'll give it a shot for you.

In all honesty, it is probably much easier to source your Spanish gun here and just enjoy the trip to Spain to see your daughter. Do visit some topas bars with her, the food is exquisite and do buy some port to bring back home with you. A case of wine is acceptable .. and port, of course, is wine.

Talk to Dale Dalrymple, at Dale's Decoy Den. He has a web site.

Dale has some experience in the area of this question, which knowledge is worth an inquiry. He is a good guy to talk to generally, on Spanish guns.

There are some complications to consider. First, I'm skeptical that you will find the kind of gun you asked about and for sure I skeptical of finding it at an attractive price. Second, I'm not sure they can sell it to you right then and there. Third, you can't bring it home with you unless you can PROVE it is an antique (pre 1899) or you have it bought enough ahead of time to get a ATF6 and have it with you. Fourth, the gun trade is in the northwest, so you are not likely to just casually visit a maker's shop. Fifth, if you can't bring it with you, export costs may well make a mid-grade gun unattractive - check on export and shipping costs before you buy!! Last, take care that you don't buy a gun just because it is there and you are there - very careful; you are very likely to be on sensory overload and just a bit jet lagged.

But, do as much research as you can and see if a plan can be made. Post back on results - many of us are nterested!!

My only words of wisdom would dovetail with Rocketman's. I had the pleasure of going through all the factories about 7 years ago. I was able to pick out my wood when there, knowing I would order a gun or two. When I returned to the states, I ordered an AyA and one Arrizabalaga and later ordered a couple more. My Spanish is passable (not really fluent) but worked well enough. I didn't try to buy any used guns and would be a little leery of doing it only because of the wide swings in quality during various periods. If you really do your homework before you go, you might do OK but the cost of import/export etc. might eat you alive.

Forester, I live in Spain but in the SW. I have a personal friend who has the wholesale distribution rights for AYA in the UK. He used to be managing director of Holland and Holland before the Chanel buy out as well. He has imported me a gun from the USA and he is a dealer for Marlin as well. I have just ordered an AYA No.1 off him. His company keeps a number of wood blanks that he has personally picked up over the years. If you tell me what you are looking for and budget I can ask him, he may be able to help best regards, Mike Bailey

I am interested in finding an older, good quality box lock. Probably a 16 gauge. Prefer something with a scalloped action, side clips, decent scroll engraving and long barrels.

I will be travelling to Murcia in SE Spain and am considering renting a car to travel up to the Basque country.

I appreciate your offer to help.
