A friend has a small gauge Belgian hammer gun with 10.4 the only marking with the ELG on the flats. I gave him a few 2" 410 shells, Eley Fourten and they fitted just fine.

I do believe part of the problem was confusion. American gun and ammunition companies had been producing shot shells in every imaginable caliber. Some also included the continental metric markings. When they tried to also include the British gauge system, some just blew it.

I have a hammer Peiper "Cape Gun" with one barrel marked ".44 Largo" (Spanish designation for .44 WCF) and the other (smoothbore) "12mm." The "12mm" is chambered for the 2" .410 shotshell. Don't see "10.4" marked on it anywhere, but 10.4 mm is the European designation for barrels of .427-.429 size elsewhere, for example in Italy.

10.4mm converts to .4094" or about the same as the .410 designation. A deep grooved rifled bbl designed for lead bullets such as the .44WCF could very conceivably be marked with a 10.4mm bore diameter & be grooved for the ordinary .427-.429 ".44Cal" bullets. The link on the .410 chamber was too small for me to read & when I tried to enlarge it, it bcame too fuzzy to read. Dimensions I have for minimum chamber for the 3" .410 list a dia at forward end of chamber of .463" with a body taper of .005" per inch, so minimum head dia would be .478. Thus it is easy to calculate that 12mm (.472") would fall a bit past 1" from the breech in a minimum chamber, a bit further if the chamber is above minimum. I am not certain if the dia of the shorter chambers are the same at the head or the forward end of the chamber.

Hello,
Rio, the shotshell manufacturer from Spain, actually called the 410 as 36 gauge, both in the boxes and in the head of every shotshell.
By the way, the Rio 3" magnum load with 11/16 oz of 7 1/2 pellets are really an excellent shotshell for hunting small game and clay shooting.
Best,
Jose M. Fernandez

Thanks for that, Jose. I'll look at the Rio shells to see if they pattern. (Need all the help I can get with a .410.....).
