Does anyone know anything about this caliber. It is stamped 240 Geddy, is not a belted case and I would like to find out if it is reloadable and where one might get the dies.

It would probably be "Gebby" rather than Geddy. I don't know about the caliber, but Gebby initiated the .22 Varminter which became the .22-250. Pictures of your gun would be nice since many talented gunsmiths built Gebby caliber rifles and we may be able to identify yours.

The 240 Super Varminter, developed by Jerry Gebby is simpy the 270 Win or 30-06 necked down to 6mm with no other changes.

It is somewhat similar to the Gibbs round, both being based on the 06/270 Win case, with more modifications being made to the Gibbs i.e. less case taper, shortened neck by moving the shoulder forward, etc.

So is the "240 Super Varminter" the same as a "6mm-06," or are there many different "6mm-06"s?

Mike A,
The 240 Super Varminter would be the same as the 6mm-06.

There is a slew of 6mm wildcats based on the 06 case, most with some modifications to the parent case i,e shortened, blown out, belt added, shoulder and neck modified etc.

By the way, as an aside, Gibbs lived in Viola, ID, a short distance out of Moscow.

I don't know if its still in print or not, probably not, but P O Ackley had a two volume set of hamdloading manuals which covered a geat number of Wildcats, along with standard factory rounds.
I don't recall offhand if this .240 Gebby/Super Varminter is covered or not.
I do recall Ackley stating that after Gebby had come up thith the .22 Varminter, he copyrighted the name & tried to restrict all chamberings for it to his shop. Others dimply re-named it the .22-250 & left him in the lurch. Something similar may well have happened to the .240 SV.

Cameron, I met and talked with Gibbs several times while I was working at UI. Colorful and opinionated for sure, but no more irascible than the average gunsmith who realizes that dumb-ass questions are costing him money and time away from the stuff he REALLY likes to do!

For me Viola was the jumping off spot for fun and games: gold, garnets, tourmaline, trout, and blue grouse. Nice place but I'm not sure what happened to it after the mill shut down.

vcmi60, let us see a picture of the Gebby Springfield. Who do you think built the gun? Maybe we can give you an idea.

Mike,

Viola is still limping along, although I suspect one of these days with the slow creep outward from Moscow, the fields around Viola will be dotted with trophy homes.

2-piper, Ackley says that original development of the 22 varminter was by Cap. Woykins with further development by Gebby and J. Bushnell Smith. Gebby copywrited the name as you mention and gun builders simply called it the 22/250 to get around Gebby's copywright name.

Not sure which was developed 1st the 22 V or the 240SV, if the 22 V was 1st, perhaps Gebby realized that copywriting the name for the 240 SV would be an effort in futility.
