Mark makes the point (1st. reply) that in England most game is driven so guns don't have to be carried far. I would think that walked up or rough shooting is the sport of the many and most shooting is in that form. Driven shooting is for the slightly more 'well heeled' to stinking rich. No, most shooting here is of the walked up variety and that probably explains why most double 12's are around the 6 1/2 pound mark. One thing I think explains why 20's have become more popular is in the advancement of cartridge quality which makes the 20 very effective. Lagopus.....

While the smallbore premium for vintage guns is more generally true, there is also a smallbore premium for some new guns. Check out prices from Lion Country Supply on their Ugartecheas. And not only doubles: there's a premium for the Benelli Ultra Light 28ga.
If we're talking doubles for upland hunting and classic guns, of both American and foreign origin, in order to get guns in the same weight class as a British game gun in 12ga (or some continental game guns), you need to go to a 16 or 20 in an American classic.

Ya wanna drive a Suburban or a Porsche? After all, Suburbans will carry more people, most have 4-wheel drive, etc.
But, a Porsche or a small-bore are simply more FUN!
So, I am an older fellow who has side by side 12's, 16's, 20's, 28's, and yes, even a .410.
The smaller the gun, the lighter it is, and the more enjoyable walking and carrying it is.
If I shoot trap; I want a heavy target gun. But, if I want a fun day of walking shooting, I like a 16 or 28. To each his own.
A heck of a lot of fellows have shot a 28 at skeet, and thought to themselves "Well, I'll be damned.......it breaks targets HARD." Then went on to think "Gee, I bet this thing would kill birds too."
And..........it does, and they do.

Another Sam, now gone, an avid Southern quail hunter who favored Pointers (Think- Olld Roy) had a pair of beat-up Remmie 11-48 self-shufflers, both in 28 gauge. Here's a man who drove a beat up older truck, went in to his stores in his hunting clothes and stood in line to pay full retail for his ammo-and could have most likely afforded a matched pair of the best Limey small bores extant- I go with the: beat up older truck, the Pointers, the waiting in line and letting Ladies go first old fashioned way of doin' things- I'd just like the late Sam Walton (think Wal-Mart) if those 28 gauges were Model 12's (like another Southern gool ol' boy name of Phil Harris shot, and very well indeed too-

In a logical world small bores would be cheaper.
Same holds true for .410 and 28 gauge ammo.
