Dear Bill (XAUSA) and Kirk (Carpetsahib)
Thanks for the kind words with regard to the rifle. I love
the combination of the scope and the Lyman 48. I follow
parts prices kind of carefully, the Lyman 48 for Winchester
Model 54 and 70 doesn't quite get the same prices as for
the Springfield. But in this case it doesn't matter, so
much wood was removed from the stock to fit the sight that
taking off the sight just will make the rifle difficult to sell.
Bill you are right that G&H didn't put the mount on. Or maybe
they did, but then at some point it got pulled and the base
was reblued and put back on. Whoever reblued the base buffed
it pretty badly. And if you look at the front scope ring, it looks like it cracked at one time and was rebrazed.
The plan is to clean it up and take it to the range. I have
a good friend here with a pre-war super-grade Model 70 with
a similar scope and mount. It will be fun to shoot both rifles
and take some pictures.
Was it a bargain? Truthfully, I got it on gunbroker and I think if I took it to a gunshow, and tried to sell it just the way I got it. I might have a hard time making back my money.
Oh, and Michael, thank you very much for looking up the reticle
pattern in your Zeiss book. I really like this particular pattern.
