Here is a picture of the overall rifle. Not the best picture
and I am embarrassed about the gin bottle and general mess on
the table. Just a well-used Model 54,with a nice side-mount
and scope, and it hasn't been cut for a recoil pad. side-view

I'd consider the gin a minor distraction from our REAL addiction.... Mess? What mess?

You didn't even mention the first model long slide Lyman 48 receiver sight (that is, you mentioned a Lyman 48, but you didn't say which kind). That's a pretty valuable item in itself.

The rig reminds me of an early Griffin & Howe Springfield. However, I don't believe G&H installed the side mount. All the G&H installations I have seen used double thick screw heads and then milled the slots off after the mount was in place.

You didn't mention what you paid for the rifle, but I have a feeling you got a real bargain.

Fred,
That is a nice looking rig, and it should serve you well. I love that combination of Zeiss scope and Lyman 48 Long Slide...

Dear Bill (XAUSA) and Kirk (Carpetsahib)

Thanks for the kind words with regard to the rifle. I love
the combination of the scope and the Lyman 48. I follow
parts prices kind of carefully, the Lyman 48 for Winchester
Model 54 and 70 doesn't quite get the same prices as for
the Springfield. But in this case it doesn't matter, so
much wood was removed from the stock to fit the sight that
taking off the sight just will make the rifle difficult to sell.

Bill you are right that G&H didn't put the mount on. Or maybe
they did, but then at some point it got pulled and the base
was reblued and put back on. Whoever reblued the base buffed
it pretty badly. And if you look at the front scope ring, it looks like it cracked at one time and was rebrazed.

The plan is to clean it up and take it to the range. I have
a good friend here with a pre-war super-grade Model 70 with
a similar scope and mount. It will be fun to shoot both rifles
and take some pictures.

Was it a bargain? Truthfully, I got it on gunbroker and I think if I took it to a gunshow, and tried to sell it just the way I got it. I might have a hard time making back my money.

Oh, and Michael, thank you very much for looking up the reticle
pattern in your Zeiss book. I really like this particular pattern.

Fred
