An interesting gun with some striking features.

But I tend to click off when I read the "NO CALIFORNIA SALES" tag. Sure, it's a free country. But why exercise your freedom to play for the Feinstein/Boxer team?

Nor a 'GHOVE'??

The pattern is a Damas Corche (Herringbone) variant which I have never seen. Note 'Damascus'

Possibly Damas Moucheté

De La Cononnerie Ou Fabrication des Canons de Fusil
By M. Ronchard-Siauve, 1864

Other Damas by varying the composition was made of the lopin with iron settings and of steel. Thus, by employing square settings or a square piece seen by end formed, by alternating the settings well, in manner of derochant la trancha the section, it represented the effect of a checkerwork, divided into black and white boxes; white boxes representing the settings of steel and black those of iron. This effect, like all the effects of Damas, is produced by the different action exerted on iron and on steel the sulphuric acid, one is useful for dérocher; iron, struck first, becomes dull and black, while the steel remains still white and preserves its polish. The pieces are welded under the power hammer and one stretches then the rods with the rolling mill with a dimension of 3 and 4 lines or 7 to 9 mm., then one makes them undergo a rather large torsion. One twists some even cold. Torsion more or less gives a drawing more or less lengthened. It is there what the Damas Mouchete' is named.
This moucheté Damas was created in St-Etienne in 1845. Mr. Albert Bernard, canonnier of Paris, came soon to Saint-Etienne to get the means of doing it.

Albert was Leopold's brother who also made guns and barrels 1850-1872.

That pattern might have been made with the barrel smith using the same stock for the fine and large pattern. The fine pattern looks to have more layers, drawn much farther, but it may have started out as the larger pattern stock.

Doc Drew, don't know if it applies to all situations, but I've seen twisting demonstrations where the stock gets quite a bit shorter. It can be drawn back out longer, but the pattern can be significantly changed and a good amount of iron/steel seems to be lost with each heat.

Just thoughts. Nice looking gun with interesting barrels.

Kinda wish I had bid on it. Anyone know if the measurements of the chamber are 14ga. Where would you get ammo?

The only option on 14 gauge is to have brass cases made or try and find vintage stuff. There is no current producer of 14 gauge ammo anywhere in the world as far as anybody I know who ever tried to find any was able to figure out.

2holer;
I don't actually have any official specs for a 14 ga chamber & they likely varied a bit from different makers anyway. However nominal bore dia for 14ga is .693. Add to that from .068" to .070" (normal range of froont end of chamber above bore size) & then about .005" per inch for the probable 65mm (2 9/16") chamber length & you sure are hitting right on the .775" diameter they listed as size for rear of chamber. I would say the possibility it was a 14 is very strong indeed.

J.B. Rivolier shows up in the 1840's. He had several patents. The firm continued on into the 1870's (perhaps later). I know they marketed a pistol with the company name on it.

Interesting pattern. Makes me wonder if he built the billets himself or had them done at a rolling mill.
