I have no idea why the finish is like it is.
This is another, typical Creedmoor Remington of the same period.

Things you may know already:

I checked eBay. There are a couple of seller with the bound year, 1875, for Harper's Weekly as well as at least 1 selling this particular issue.

Interesting that the photograph is not the same as the print in Harper's. Rockwood must have taken a series of photo's at the event. I would not be surprised if he did individual portraits of the competitors with their rifles. This was a common subject for 19th century photographs. Certainly he would had done it so he could sell the images later from his shop. People would visit photographers saloon's to collect such images to display at home or place in their family album.

The GEH database contains the following information. While it lists institutional holders, it not does have information regarding which photos they hold.

Thanks Pete, the Rockwood photo is of the 1874 team. The Harpers woodcut is of the 1875 team and the picture I’m looking for. I took the pictures I posted from an original Harper’s Weekly.

I have a lot of Bodine info including his obituary. Bodine owned a large collection of firearms and one source believed that his family sold the collection before WWI.
His Sharps Borchardt sold at the Amber auction and it has the same Remington barrel, forend without checkering, rounded rubber forend tip and front-sight set back 1 ½” . All Circumstantial evidence but have to start somewhere.

As time allows I will spend more time looking for the original picture.

From George Maddis' THE WINCHESTER HANDBOOK, pp 70-71,

Regarding finishes of the 1885, "Receivers and buttplates were case hardened as the standard finish on serials to 90,000. This case hardening was of a gray color which gives the appearance of a flecked nickle finish."

I don’t know about the early 85 Winchester coloring but I do know that a Remington put up and not used would look a lot like this.
