Anyone know or have a set of 8x57jr and 8x57jrs dies? Just got the 3 drilling I bought 2 weeks ago and am itching to shoot them.

Mike,
I think you could use normal 8x57 JS Mauser dies, with a different shell holder of course.
Are the drillings as expected? Good bores? My "cheap" Krieghoff 8x57 IRS came here recently and while the rifle bore is not pristine (somewhat tired from the chamber up, but sharp and deep towards the muzzle) the first test shooting was satisfactory.

With kind regards,
Jani

Now, I'm like Jani in his answer. If the case is the same as a standard rimless case, except that it is a rimmed version, I believe you can use standard dies made for the rimless version of the case, except use a shell holder that will fit your rimmed case.

Mike,
Jani and ChiefShotguns are correct, but you may have to remove the expander button if you use .318 bullets, otherwise the caseneck may not hold the bullet.I load 8x57J,JS,JR,JRS,and 8x72R with the same set of 8mm Mauser dies,by changing shellholders and expander buttons( or use no expander and deprime by hand with a shop made punch).

Jani all 3 were a little loose on lockup. One locks up tight with the pin turned 180 degrees. The other two will need a new hingepin made. They're shootable but I'd rather have them like they should be. Shotgun barrels are much better than expected, no pits in any of them, the rifle bores are dark in the grooves but no visable pits. Have to do a good cleaning.

Thanks for sharing, Mike. These old drillings are fun aren't they.

I use ordinary Hornady 8x57 FL dies, but I got an extra factory expander button and turned it down a little in a lathe, so that the same die set will do for both .318" and .323" Just looking at those 2 numbers, I guess it was 5-thou taken off. So long as the sized case neck holds the bullet firmly, and a new bullet will also slide in and out of a fired neck, you've got it right.

Hornady use a sliding bullet sleeve in the seating die. The .318" bullets seem to seat straight even though they're undersize, but I also use a Hornady device that straightens the bullets besides so that they have just 1 or 2-thou runout.

The bore on my 8x57JR Drilling is certainly worn, but it still shoots well. I used Norma 8x57RS brass and RWS 196 grain .318" bullets.

I also use "regular" rimless 8mm Mauser dies to reload rimmed cases for my Sempert-Krieghoff drilling. My drilling has the advantage of being an "S" bore, so no hunting down .318 slugs for me.
