Proof marks appear to be a crown. A u and a 118/35. Also an eagle and maybe an older eagle that was removed? Below all that there appears to be an L in an oval. I think the shotgun proofs are on the flats. But he didn't want to take the gun apart I suppose.

Possibly a K in a jagged circle. It is some 9.3mm variant or a cartridge based on the 360 BPE. More than likely 65mm shotshell chambers. It must be some variant on Modell 6292 if it has a rear ocular. Seeing that it does not have the noses on the sides of the tubeset labeled as Burgsmüller's Sicherheits Verschluß or safety lockup with sideframe reinforcement, which was apparently covered under some D.R.G.M. Nr.( gebrauchsmuster ), it is not the Modell 6298. The Modell 6292 would have been advertised as "Extra Solide Hahn-Drillinge". Pin configuration is a little different.

Kind Regards,

I can deal with the 65mm chambers as I already order that ammo for my Fox. The rifle barrel sounds like a crap shoot until a cast is made. And it sounds unlikely from what I have read that the one commercially available round would be correct. Still the guns fascinating to me. I wish it was local to that I could take it to a smith and have the barrels checked for wall thickness.

Any thoughts on condition from anyone here?

shanebevel,
The 118,35(they used a , where we use a .)is the bore(not groove)diameter, expressed in gauge. Rifles with this mark usually have a groove diameter of around .358.It supports the idea that the nominal caliber is 9.3x72R as stated. However, this same marking is found on other caliber rifles such as 9x58 1/2 R S&S,9.3x57R,9.3x70R,9.3x82R Nimrod, etc. A chambercast would be necessary to determine the correct chamber, but "likelyhood" would be on the side of 9.3x72R. The crown U is the mark for a "view proof", which is really a detailed inspection. While I didn't see the usual marks indicating it, my overall impression was that the drilling was likely proofed in Zella Mehlis, therefore made in the area.
