I have an early Crass model, SN 153xx, grade 2. The company name is stamped on the sides of the receiver with engraved scrolling. The bottom of the receiver is deeply engraved in the grade 2 style.
It also came with a second set of barrels, 21 3/4", with matching serial number. The first set are 30".

Were 2 barrel sets common to Crass manufactor?

Second set could have been ordered with the original purchase. Or, the gun later could have been sent back for a second set which would have been numbered to the gun. Is there a 2 on the barrel lump or on the side of forearm lug.

I don't imagine a two-barrel set Ithaca Crass Model would be any more or less common than a two-barrel Parker Bros., Remington Arms Co., Hunter Arms Co., L.C. Smith, Lefever Arms Co. or Baker Gun Co. double would have been in 1891. I doubt the short set started life at 21 3/4 inch length. Quite possibly it would have been the original set that got damaged and cut back and a second set was added. All pure speculation.

Short barrels have a D on the barrel lump and a R on the barrel flat. The long barrels have a R on the forend hanger. The recevier has a D next to the sn.

I would like to see photos but I think the D means damascus. (T was used for twist.) The R means it went back to the factory for some sort of repair or, perhaps in this case, a new set of barrels. It is too bad that that era records are missing. The story I got was they were destroyed in an office fire. Here is a Grade 3. Does your D look similar?

Mr. Snyder
Exactly the same except mine is a grade 2. Thanks for the info. I'm guessing this gun is a 1889-1891 vintage.

I don't believe it was real uncommon back then to have a short set of barrels for use as a coach gun and a long set for bird hunting. I have a Nichols and Lefever A grade that came that way with factory short and long barrels. Pretty fancy gun for use as a coach gun alone.

Ill have to wait till I get home to look at the numbers on it but there is only 4 digits. I do however have pictures.... and nope, I dont know how to post them.... great! haha well please feel free to email me anything I guess and I can send pics bbeenn76@yahoo.com or just let me know how to work this forum... That would prob. help best.
