I'm looking for recommendations for a reliable, high-quality auction house (or similar), that can handle selling a Lefever 12 ga damascus twist double.

I don't have easy access to it at the moment (or photos), but I'm pretty sure it's an H-grade.

I'd rather avoid online sales sites like gunbroker.

An H grade Lefever, unless it is in truly exceptionable condition, isn't going to command enough being sold through one of the high end auction houses to make it worth while. The bidder is going to have to pay an average of 15-18% premium and will adjust his bid downward accordingly and you will end up paying at least 10% back to the house.

Hello Twisted and welcome to the site smile

A great way is to go here and post it

http://www.doublegunshop.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=postlist&Board=3&page=1

The cost is minimal and the folks here understand older guns.

Mike

p.s. Good pictures and an accurate discription are most helpful

p.s.s. What location? Near Amarillo, Texas ?? smile

The history of this particular shotgun is that it was originally owned by my great great grandfather, who was also a gunsmith (first in Colorado, and later in San Diego, from roughly 1880 to 1910). Out of the many guns he owned and worked on, he was particularly proud of this one. I heard a family story that he tuned or enhanced it in some way -- but whatever he did isn't obvious from the outside.

I shot the gun several times when I was a kid, in the late 60's and early 70's. My Dad put .410 sleeves in both barrels, so we could use modern .410 ammunition with it.

It's located in the central coast area of California at the moment, with my mom.

I don't have any pictures yet. I hoped to have them soon, but now it looks like I won't have them until March.

Other online sites that may help are gunsinternational.com and gunbroker.com. I have had good experiences with both.

From memory only, it looks very much like this one:

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=321619960

The side-to-side lever, the safety, the pattern on the barrels and down the middle of them, the stock, the removable cover under the barrels, and so on, are all as I remember them.

One reason I'm trying to avoid using an online site is that my mom doesn't want to deal with shipping it to the end user/buyer; she would prefer going through an intermediary -- one who could also clean it up and provide an accurate description and condition grading would be useful, too.

To keep things simple, you could just find a good local shop and consign the gun. They will take 15% to 25% of the sale price, but you won't have to do anything other than wait for a buyer. Not nearly as many lookers as at an auction, though.
