As Joe kind of says, the chequering is well worn, although still there.
If the original poster has no experience of these things I would strongly advise against any clean-up attempts on the gun, too often original or patinated finish can be lost through over ambitous cleaning.

Advise from an old man
Leave the gun alone
Have a Qualified Side by Side Gunsmith evaluate the item
Get some more appraisals
Consider offers but do not be in a hurry to sell.
Only sell to someone who will properly care for the gun.

PM me if you need more old man advice smile smile

Mike

p.s. In which state do you live so we can direct you to a proper gunsmith?

I live in Montana North of Missoula. There is a gunsmith in Plains MT that has been at it for Probably 30 years. When I get time I will have him look at it

Looks long past that to me.

This could very well be the case jOe. However sometimes you get a pleasant surprise after cleaning out the gook and it's virtually a no cost procedure.

What I saw looked more like wear or abuse to me.

This gun was ordered to be made without chokes. I would say it is a medium grade. most of their guns in this early period are: medium grade, are side lever opening, most have a wedge fore-arm fastener, a screw-in hex. nut firing pin, one locking slot under barrels and a steel butt plate. Ser. # 1907 also has the San Francisco address. Most have LONDON in the address. Perhaps these guns were sold through the S.F. store?
