Bob, you are right, at auction in the UK if the wall thickness is 0.02 or better and is in proof it is good to go, below that they will put an advisery warning on it. Mind you we don�t put the loads that you chaps on the other side of the pond do, we tend to stick to 2 3/4 with 1 1/16 oz of shot tops, best, Mike

Primary concern for wall thickness is in the first 9" from the breech. By the time you have reached about 15" from the breech the man concern re wall thickness is just for rigidity & dent resistance.

2, the few guns i have seen with burst barrels seem to have failed about mid way. have seen more guns with bulged barrels. bulges seem to be in the first 12 inches or so up from the breeches. and of course there are many more with bulges in the choke area.

Remember on th new ones they drill holes in the barrels. As said dent resistance is the important factor. Mark II

If the barrels are above .020 I would not be that shy. 025 would be better but have you looked at the what .003 looks like? My eyes can not see .003. That is if the thin area is near the choke end of the barrel. Thin barrels in that area are more a concern of dents than bursting. Use the right loads and you will be fine unless you are prone to falling down a lot or banging barrels into walls, tables or rocks. If that is the case use a gas auto so no one cries about ruining a classic gun.

Bulges are the result of barrel obstructions, not wall thickness.

As others have stated, it depends on just where the walls are that thin.
