Thanks, I know it is not the kind of question that is easily or happily answered. I have long hesitated to even ask it. But, I just wanted to know what sort of sandbox I might be playing in and whether my only hope is to find some poor widow on her death bed that doesn't know what she has. Happily, it seems I might have to get a little lucky but not not resort to ripping off the old woman for her late husband's treasure.

I looked at a G&H on an auction saw that, at least at the moment, it is not in the stratosphere. But its reserve has not been met and yet at the price it is at, it is more than I would want to spend. But then it is stamped as a G&H.

But anyway, if there are nice rifles in the sub $1k area, I will keep an eye out for them. Perhaps one will fall my way.

For all the rifles that I currently own, I do not have a smokeless caliber centerfire rifle. If I am ever going to break that barrier, perhaps this would be an interesting way to do it.

All of these threads have given me things to look for - though I have no hope of discovering an undetected master's work except by accident.

But I will check with you guys, just in case, and before I saw those overly long forearms down to something more appealing. smile

Love the orphaned stock you made complete. Any full length pictures? Inspiring to say the least.

Brent, I have put together a nice little collection of one master's prewar rifle work without really putting out any feelers or doing any correspondence. I am a shotgun person and have no inside track to the custom rifle world. I could have a nice Griffin and Howe collection at a reasonable price if I had written the right checks over the years.

King,

There is a long trail of mistakes and opportunities missed behind me. I try to learn from them but not always.

Eightbore,

I got into the custom rifle field at a great time, back when you could not give away a sporterized 1903. I remember my first Niedner-Shelhamer set me back $225 and I thought that was over priced at the time. Back in the old Shotgun News days there might be a half dozen Bob Owen's for sale in every issue, now it takes a year to see that many.

Any major restoration like the Wundhammer that I am involved in are marked with my "MP". If it has a trapdoor butt that is where it's marked, if not on the forward part of the lower housing where the "NRA" would be marked on a sales rifle.

Great looking rifle! And what a piece of wood. The more I see, the more I like. Thank you for sharing.

Steve,

When I first got the stock I thought I would fix it up then trade it for something. The more time I spent on it plus with all the help I got from folks the more I liked the rifle. After all of that it would be hard to part with so now it's part of the Wundhammer addiction.

I like the wood...a lot ;-).

Thanks Michael. I'm slowly putting one together in this style and your color photos are wonderful. It looks like lots of drop on this stock. I bet in handles great!

IMO the Wundhammers were built to suit the shooter as well as any I have had the pleasure of handling. Many folks are very surprised when they throw one of them up to their shoulder for the first time. But then I'm on the six-step program to kicking the Wundhammer habit.
