Not to rain on Smith's parade, but when I have the 3-position safety in its rear position, the recoil slides the gun under my thumb just enought to move the safety to its middle position - no second shot! Yeah, I know, build up my grip strength in my right hand.

CMWill, the three position safety lasted until at least 1927 because I have a Specialty Grade of that vintage that has/had one. I don't know why Hunter Arms finally did discontinue the feature, but I'll bet it was because shooters could never keep up with which position it was in, and hated the feature! It has certainly baffled me (and scared me from time to time also) so I ordered the Numrich 2 position kit and replaced the 3 position safety in both of my Elsies...Geo

I have a couple of the three position safety's and I like them a lot, really easy and simple to use.....leave it in the rear position and the safety stays off for as many shots as you choose as you open and close the gun multiple times........use the middle and forward position and it activates the auto safety each time the action is opened.......how simple is that......

Anybody who is attentive and shoots very active live birds at a fast pace, like doves, usually likes the older three position safety because of the "no auto safety" position.......

Many active shooters today disable their safety's entirely for just that reason, or order new guns with NO safety.......And some new guns (mainly European), like the Dickinson's come WITHOUT the automatic safety option, manual only.....you want it, you turn it on, I like that.......perfect and simple.......

Like anything else, to each his own....some people like headlights or running lights that come on every time you start the vehicle and voices that tell you what to do, and bells or tones etc., not for me......but whatever floats yer boat.........

Thanks everybody. Corvallis is almost close enough to drive to. It could certainly be a nice weekend in Newport. I will at least feel better about the gun not being in the hands of a shipping company all the way across the country. I have done a fair bit of work on a spanish sidelock I owned before but that gun only cost $100. That gun gave me more gunsmithing practice than I cared for. I'd like to see this Elsie taken care of better.

I may change my mind later on but the 3 position safety seems like a nice feature to me. For reference this one is a 1931 according to the LCSCA lookup service. Presumably that means someone special ordered the 3 position safety on it. Maybe someday after I have verified it's effectiveness on grouse I might send off for a research letter.

Rob,
I'm in Longview. Mr Nelson is a little closer to me. If I can't get in contact with him I might take you up on the offer though.

thanks

David, I have 1930 16 with three way.

I decock my two ways by breaking it open, pushing down the lever lock plunger, moving it to fire position and pulling the triggers with the gun open. Then move the lever to open position and close the gun. Lefevers have always had the feature of just opening the gun, pull the triggers and closing. Matter of fact the Lefever barrels will raise up when decocking.

I do believe the primary purpose of the 3 position safety on the LC and a few other makers was to allow the option of using a resetting safety or a "hunter's" safety, which resets.
I cannot say as I have ever heard of the purpose being to uncock the gun while open. And why would one want to uncock a gun when open? Just do it closed, and if you have a gun without a 3 position safety and the gun is broken down, then just trip the lever closed.
I once came across an LC that someone put a bead of solder behind the safety button as to prevent it from going back to the third position.

The purpose of the 3-position safeties was so one could use it as an auto safe or non-auto safe as occasion warranted. No; it was not designed for the purpose of letting down the hammers. One of course does not let down the hammers with the gun open, but rather as the gun closes, when the gun bolts closed the hammers are down. "IF" one has a gun with a 3-position safety or a no-auto safe & "IF" the gun is stored assembled & "IF" one desires the gun be stored with the hammers down then this is the absolutle easiest method of doing it. There are, I have heard, a few ejector guns that shold not have the hammers so lowered, but not sure which ones. The only ejector I currently own with a 3-position safty is a Lefever & it works great on it.
