Prussian Daly/Sauer Meistergrades are some of the best built and safest guns out there, bar none!

oldmanriver, yes you are correct that the german action I was refering to was a "blitz action" which is not exactly the same as a round action

One reason for SLs is custom engraving. Seems I see it more on Elsies than other American classics.

I've come over to boxlocks. There is beauty in simplicity.

Engraving don't put meat on the table. I like my box locks.

Practice safe eating. Always use a condiment.

It is true that engraving does not put meat on the table, nor do elegant lines in themselves. That said a beautiful gun, SLE or BLE does warm the heart and is a better carry than the same gun with no embellishment.

It could be said that the guns someone took the time to engrave well are more likely better balanced and better finished overall.

Well said Colonel! And, many of the English boxlocks that were built before the 1st World War were built and finished as "best" guns, and were priced accordingly. W W Greener certainly considered boxlocks as "best", as did Westley Richards.

Having studied, appreciated and learnt a little about old British guns over the years, I have come to appreciate the qualities of the various types of action, mechanism and configuration.

That I have a 20-bore Purdey single trigger over/under in the gun safe, as well as perhaps a hundred and fifty other top quality guns of all types - and choose to shoot a no-name jones under-lever hammer gun almost all the time probably says more about me than it does about the guns!

Quality boxlocks are hugely under appreciated and undervalued.

Under appreciated, I will agree with, and if the repeating shotgun had never been invented, I would agree with undervalued. But, here in the largest shotgun market that ever was and will ever be, the SXS shotgun (pick your type) is, at best, no more than a historical footnote. Value is created by demand, and few demand boxlocks. Keep in mind, it is pretty rare to see more than 100 people viewing this website.

This is mostly good for us.

Best,
Ted

Old Brummie adage . A good box lock is better than a cheap sidelock ".
