The filing refered to was more than likely the shaping of the action during the original manufacture.

Any ideas as to how desirable this gun is and likely worth? Thanks again. If the gun locks up tight and the bores are clean (not pitted) and they've not been honed out too much (this takes specialized tools to measure)....and the gun has a solid stock with no visible cracks. I'd put a value between $1400.00 and $1800.00.

The stock has no cracks, nor does the fore end The hinge is rather loose, but the bores are clean. Thanks

Looks like a very nice and solid Greener. Enjoy holding a unique piece of history that represents the amazing craftsmanship England supplied in the 1870's. Remember, machinery such as milling machines were very crude at that time and it was only the skill of the workmen with their files, chisels and forge that produced such a remarkable shotgun.

Would it be a good idea to try to have the Damascus barrels cleaned or just leave it is, as far as maintaining maximum collector value is concerned? Thanks

Please leave it alone And if a collector buys it then HE can do what he wants to with the gun. If, on the other hand, you wish to become the caretaker of this piece and spend lots of money and gaze upon it with joy from time to time and perhaps shoot it, then yes, do a proper resortation. Mike

Leave it as is, just have it checked for mechanical issues. If something is broken or excessively worn, fix it.
Collectors want original finish. Mess with that original finish and you'll lower the gun's value.
If "cleaning" the bbls involves polishing them, I wouldn't do it. I would just take some solvent to them and wipe away any grease or gunk.

If the "hinge is rather loose" it should be attended to before you attempt to shoot this gun with low pressure ammo only of course. A technique I've used in the past to clean up damascus barrels is to coat them with Simonize car wax which is mildly abrasive and does a good job of removing surface tarnish without disturbing the original finish.
