Hello to all, I am new to this forum and have some questions regarding a gun that I just purchased. this is a 16 gauge with a beautiful bore. appears to never have been fired, trigger guard i was told is made out of cape buffalo horn. if anyone could give me an idea of value and origin I would greatly appreciate it...

also if it helps i was told that this gun was probably originally made with two different sets of barrels one being the 16 gauge and the other being a large bore rifle... any truth to this?? and would i be able to find a donor set of barrels to complete my piece.

I doubt it was made with rifle and shotgun barrels the firing pins would be different between the two. I'd say it's value would be between 12 and 15 hundred.

Rick, the only Lechner that I know is still in business but it is not in Nürnberg it is in Austria in Graz and the name of the shop owner is Lechner & Jungl.Looking at the shape of the tang it is an early gun, to tell you when it was made you need post pictures of the barrel flats and action of your gun. I can confirm that your gun never had a second rifle barrel.

It's quite a distance, say 500km, between Graz, Austria to Nürnberg, Germany, so I think this Lechner was a descendant of Hans Lechner, who it appears was better known for his Buchel Scheibenwaffen or target arms from Nürnberg( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuremberg ), which was a focal center for trading since at least the time of the Roman Empire. Hans Lechner was active in the Bundesfest and placed 4th for the stand target in July 15-22 of 1906 in Munich. Target arms with his name atop the rib date to the beginning of WWI with some having Franz Ernst H. Georg Lechner?. After the war the name Georg Lechner of Nurnberg appears atop the rib of target arms sometimes with Franz Ernst as Inh. or Inhaber or proprietor. So Hans and Franz might have been in a business or Franz picked up the pieces after WWII with Georg's talent. It has one of the longest toplevers I've seen. Images of all the marks will point to the maker or area of the mechanic's shop.

Interesting waffenhändler J. Michalek Berlin on the left lock.

It has a single set trigger on the right side. Can't really see what the term for safe is but the sporting weapon may have been sourced from Weipert, but the marks will prove it out.

Still difficult to tell, but it looks like FEST under the toplever; maybe German? The sidelock sporting weapon looks like it was sourced from Gustav Bittner of Wiepert, but let us see the marks.

Rick,
With the single set trigger,it very well could have also had combination barrels.

jOe,
Firing pins wouldn't have to be different, I have a Sauer sxs combination gun that had the same firing pins for both barrels; until I had the rifle's pin changed, due to a blown primer.

A rifle takes a smaller firing pin than a shotgun.

jOe,
Reread my comment. Also, your opinion presupposes that a firing pin small enough for a rifle somehow won't fire a shotgun shell. I also have a o/u with both double shotgun and double rifle barrels. I don't have to change firing pins when I change barrels.
