an interesting subject and one we have done a fair bit of experimenting on in my shop. The final finish is a result of: the level of polish, the strength of the acid solution, time exposed to it, temperature, and humidity. Changing any of these factors will result in a slightly different finishes. I have stopped using a sweat box and just close the door to my bluing room room and bring my tank up to boil for a few minutes which brings both temp and humidity up. I have gone to doing lots of very short passes usually, but it will vary if I'm going for a more satin look. I rarely polish beyond 400 grit and always use a fine wire wheel before I rust my first pass. After that I hand card with degreased 0000 steel wool. Lots of ways to get it done and we all seem to have or own way we settle on, kinda like stock finish.
